संज्ञा की पहचान कई बार सरल होती है । उदाहरण के लिए जिस शब्द के अंत में ness हो वह शब्द संज्ञा होता है, जैसे – Long illness has made him weak ( लंबी बीमारी ने उसे कमजोर बना दिया है ) में illness संज्ञा है । ये शब्द विशेषण में ness लगाने से बनते हैं । उदाहरण के लिए कुछ शब्द नीचे दिए गये हैं, ध्यान दें:

जैसे ill से illness

good से goodness

sad से sadness

thick से thickness

great से greatness इत्यादि ।

Assistance ( सहायता ) भाव वाचक संज्ञा यहां assist किया से बनी है । स्पष्ट है कि assist किया पद को संज्ञा में बदलने के लिए ance जोड़ा गया है । इसी प्रकार बने कुछ अन्य शब्द नीचे दिए जा रहे हैं:

allow से allowance

ally से alliance

clear से clearance

pursue से pursuance

दूध फट गया है ।

कमरा साफ़ रखो ।

गीले कपड़े धूप में डाल दो ।

मैं ज़रा तैयार हो लूं ।

तुम बड़ी देर लगा रहे हो ।

You are taking too long.

हम वहां वक्त से पहले पहुंचेंगे ।

We’ll reach there before time.

उसकी सास अच्छे स्वभाव की महिला है, परंतु उसकी बहुएं बुरे स्वभाव की हैं ।

Her mother-in-law is good natured, but not her daughters-in-law.

तुम्हें अपने वायदे से नहीं फिरना चाहिए ।

मेरे मामा मुझसे मिलने आये हैं ।

My maternal uncle has come to see me.

इनको आपसे कुछ काम है ।

This gentleman has some work with you.

मुझे उसके घर जाना है ।

I have to go to his house.

वह अपने माता - पिता से अलग है ।

He lives separately from his parents.

• अंग्रेजी में शब्द के अंत में s लगाकर बहुवचन बनाते हैं, परंतु कुछ शब्दों के साथ s बड़ी सावधानी से लगाना पड़ता है । उदाहरण के लिए, son-in-law का बहुवचन sons-in-law है, son-in-laws नहीं । इसी प्रकार निम्नलिखित शब्दों के बहुवचन बनते हैं:
• Father-in-law ससुर = Fathers-in-law
• Brother-in-law बहनोई; साला; देवर; जेठ = Brothers-in-law
• Mother-in-law सास = Mothers-in-law
• Sister-in-law भाभी; साली = Sisters-in-law
• देखना यह होता है कि शब्द समूह में जो अधिक महत्वपूर्ण शब्द हो उसी के साथ s जोड़ा जाए । इसी नियम के अनुसार step-son का बहुवचन step-sons बनता है और maidservant का बहुवचन maidservants ।
