- अंग्रेजी में शब्द के अंत में s लगाकर बहुवचन बनाते हैं, परंतु कुछ शब्दों के साथ s बड़ी सावधानी से लगाना पड़ता है । उदाहरण के लिए, son-in-law का बहुवचन sons-in-law है, son-in-laws नहीं । इसी प्रकार निम्नलिखित शब्दों के बहुवचन बनते हैं:
- Father-in-law ससुर = Fathers-in-law
- Brother-in-law बहनोई; साला; देवर; जेठ = Brothers-in-law
- Mother-in-law सास = Mothers-in-law
- Sister-in-law भाभी; साली = Sisters-in-law
- देखना यह होता है कि शब्द समूह में जो अधिक महत्वपूर्ण शब्द हो उसी के साथ s जोड़ा जाए । इसी नियम के अनुसार step-son का बहुवचन step-sons बनता है और maidservant का बहुवचन maidservants ।
