What is the question tag? Or Question tag (also known as tail question) in English

Question tags (also known as tail question) are short questions at the end of statements.
  • confirm that something is true or not, or to encourage a reply from the person we are speaking to.
Question tags (also known as tail question) are formed with the auxiliary or modal verb from the statement and the appropriate subject.

A positive statement is followed by a negative question tag (also known as tail question).

Example:
  1. It is hot today, isn’t it?
  2. They are English, aren’t they?
  • is or are – positive statement
  • isn’t or aren’t – negative question tag
A negative statement is followed by a positive question tag (also known as tail question).

Example:
  1. It isn’t cold today, is it?
  2. You weren’t happy, were you?
  • isn’t or weren’t – negative statement
  • is or were - positive question tag
When the verb in the main sentence is in the present simple we form the question tag (also known as tail question) with do and does.

Example:
  1. You play the game, don't you?
  2. Nisha likes Riya, doesn't she?
If the verb is in the past simple we use did.

Example:
  1. She reached home late again, didn’t she?
When the statement contains a word with a negative meaning, the question tag (also known as tail question) needs to be positive.

Example:
  1. We never forget our childhood, do we?
