- confirm that something is true or not, or to encourage a reply from the person we are speaking to.
Question tags (also known as tail question) are formed with
the auxiliary or modal verb from the statement and the appropriate subject.
A positive statement is followed by a negative question tag
(also known as tail question).
Example:
- It is hot today, isn’t it?
- They are English, aren’t they?
- is or are – positive statement
- isn’t or aren’t – negative question tag
A negative statement is followed by a positive question tag
(also known as tail question).
Example:
- It isn’t cold today, is it?
- You weren’t happy, were you?
- isn’t or weren’t – negative statement
- is or were - positive question tag
When the verb in the main sentence is in the present simple
we form the question tag (also known as tail question) with do and does.
Example:
- You play the game, don't you?
- Nisha likes Riya, doesn't she?
If the verb is in the past simple we use did.
Example:
- She reached home late again, didn’t she?
When the statement contains a word with a negative meaning,
the question tag (also known as tail question) needs to be positive.
Example:
- We never forget our childhood, do we?
