Use of what in interrogative sentences

Use of What: 

WHAT is used to refer to specific information. (= I want to know the thing)

Example:

Question: What do you want?

प्रश्न: तुम क्या चाहते हो?

Answer: A glass of milk.

उत्तर: एक गिलास दूध ।

Question: What are you writing?

प्रश्न: तुम क्या लिख रहे हो?

Answer: A letter.

उत्तर: पत्र लिख रहा हूं ।

Question: What do you want to say?

प्रश्न: तुम क्या कहना चाहते हो?

Answer: Nothing.

उत्तर: कुछ नहीं ।

Question: What’s ( What is ) your name?

प्रश्न: तुम्हारा नाम क्या हैं?

Answer: Mitesh.

उत्तर: मितेष ।

Question: What’s your father?

प्रश्न: तुम्हारे पिताजी क्या काम करते हैं?

Answer: He is an editor.

उत्तर: वे एक सम्पादक हैं ।

Question: What’s your mother?

प्रश्न: तुम्हारी माताजी क्या काम करती हैं?

Answer: She is a housewife.

उत्तर: वे घर का काम संभालती हैं ।

Question: What are you doing these days?

प्रश्न: तुम इन दिनों क्या कर रही हो?

Answer: I am studying in the eighth class.

उत्तर: मैं आठवीं कक्षा मैं पढ़ रही हूं ।

Question: What have you seen in Agra?

प्रश्न: तुमने आगरा में क्या देखा हैं?

Answer: The Taj Mahal.

उत्तर: ताजमहल ।

Question: What did you write to your father?

प्रश्न: तुमने पिताजी को क्या लिखा?

Answer: About my results.

उत्तर: नतीजे के बारे में लिखा ।

Question: What was she doing in Mumbai?

प्रश्न: वह मुम्बई में क्या कर रही थी?

Answer: She was a teacher in a primary school.

उत्तर: एक प्राइमरी स्कूल में अध्यापिका थी ।

Question: What do you intend doing after passing High School?

प्रश्न: दसवीं कक्षा उत्तीर्ण करके तुम क्या करोंगे?

Answer: I shall go for further studies.

उत्तर: आगे पढूंगा ।

• What is  का छोटा रुप  (Shortened form) हैं । What’s  का बोलचाल की भाषा में अधिक प्रयोग होता हैं । अब लिखने में भी इन  (Shortened form) का काफी प्रयोग होने लगा हैं । ऐसे दूसरे उदाहरण हैं,  It is के लिए  It’s, You are के लिए  you’re, I have के लिए  I’ve आदि ।

(B)

1. I do not know what you say.
2. I do not remember what you said.
3. I do not remember what you had said.
4. Tell me, what this is?
5. Tell me, what that was.

• A वाले वाक्य प्रश्नसूचक हैं, B वाले सीधे हैं । प्रश्नवाचक वाक्यों को सामान्य वाक्य में वदलने के लिए ( 1 ) सहक्रियाएं  do, did  आदि हट जाती हैं और इन सामान्य क्रियाओं का प्रयोग होता हैं, जैसे – What do you say  का  you say  और  What did you say का  What you said आदि ( 2 ) प्रश्नसूचक वाक्यों में सहायक क्रिया  is, was, had आदि हो तो वह क्रिया  object के बाद चली जाती हैं । इसी प्रकार साधारण वाक्यों के प्रश्नसूचक वाक्य इस प्रकार बनेंगे ।

1. I do not know who he is.
2. Tell me whom you want.
3. Tell me whose book that was.
4. I do not know how old you are.
5. Tell me how she knew.
6. You did not say whom you had promised.

(B)

1. Who is he?
2. Whom do you want?
3. Whose book was that?
4. How old are you?
5. How did she know?
6. Whom had you promised?
